Weather can be tough on faces, those cold blustery days, horizontal rain or scorching hot rays take their toll, it’s no wonder our skin feels and looks that little less radiant than it should.Establishing a good year round skin care regime supports the natural cell renewal processes but lets face it, other than a regular and sometimes hurried cleanse, tone and moisturise routine, we don’t always pay attention to those small but important actions that can make a big difference to the way skin feels and looks. Our suggestion? One simple change ..... exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
Exfoliation is an often over-looked but highly beneficial skin support mechanism. The naturally occurring process of continuous cell renewal sends those dead cells to the surface but, slows down as we age and is often the cause of uneven, congested and dull looking skin. Exfoliation simply gives a helping hand, removing the dead surface cells to reveal a brighter, more even complexion. The only trick is to do it it regularly and do it properly.
There are two methods commonly used at home; mechanical or chemical. Most of us are familiar with the mechanical having used facial brushes, muslin cloths or scrubs containing any number of exfoliants from sugar to crushed apricot kernel. The chemical process employs particular groups of acids such as BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids e.g. salicylic acid) or AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids e.g. fruit enzymes) to actively breakdown and aid removal of the dull old cells. Not as scary as it may sound!
Products vary widely, their effectiveness being wholly depend upon proper application, your skins own needs and of course, the quality of the ingredients. Choose a product suitable for your skin type, avoiding excessive abrasion or irritation and incorporate into your regular routine either daily or weekly as your skin requires. Learn to listen to your skin. If it becomes red or sore you are certainly doing too much, too often or the product may simply be too harsh.
A great place to start is a gentle daily exfoliator such as Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant which is suitable for most skin types, combining the mechanical exfoliants of rice bran with the chemical Papain extract, salicylic acid and rice enzymes. This high impact microfoliant packed full of active botanicals will stimulate cell renewal, brighten and smooth skin to reveal a clear, even complexion.
Alternatively, try the twice weekly non abrasive Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant which combines Alpha Hydroxy Lactic Acid and Beta Hydroxy Salicylic Acid with Sulfur, Papain and Bromelain enzymes to remove excess surface cells and speed up cell renewal. The heavenly but subtle scent of skin calming Lavender will certainly make this an enticing and effective part of your weekly routine.
Whether choosing a weekly or daily product just remember to exfoliate gently and regularly to support you skins health and radiance long term.
