Giving: Next Chapter gets charitable status!

With the launch of Oqibo late last year so began a relationship with fabulous Next Chapter, an incredible charity helping individuals and communities do amazing things. 100% of the funds raised go directly to education, training and healthcare projects that help create self-sufficiency through sustainable income.

With every Oqibo product purchased, a donation is paid forward to help support Next Chapter's activities. Buying Oqibo means supporting some spectacular projects around the globe.

This week Next Chapter finally got their charitable status approved which means that you'll be seeing lots of projects and updates over the coming year.

Website launches soon but you can read a wee bit more via the Oqibo website!

Teaching pamper skills to women in the Congo!

We recently gave dermalogica samples to a team of people from a local church, who were visiting Butembo, in the North East of the Democratic Republic of Congo.  As the Jersey Company we wholeheartedly support JoinFITE, established by Dermalogica, who help women entrepreneurs all around the world fund microloans to start or develop their business.  We saw this as a great opportunity to give something (however small) to women find themselves in challenging situations everyday, just like the women who apply to JoinFITE.Here's their story:

We travelled to DR Congo with the aim of establishing links within the city to partner with schools, hospitals and NGOs. One of the groups we'd previously worked with support ex-child soldiers and victims of rape. We spent time with them, listening to their stories and gave them gifts, including some of the dermalogica samples given to us by The Jersey Company.

The DR Congo has struggled to recover from war for the past 10 years and this area has very little input from aid groups as it still has a lot of rebel activity.

Lydia, one of the team members said: "It's hard to put into words some of the things that these people have already been through in the early stages of their lives. We wanted to bring a simple message of love."

Whilst we were there we also spent an afternoon with many of the women from one of the local churches. As communication was difficult due to the language barriers we decided the best way to communicate was demonstrating how to use the dermalogica product samples and then we let the women practice on each other. They had huge amounts of fun applying face masks, moisturisers and massaging each other's hands as well as a bit of nail painting. As you can see from the pictures they thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Pamper sessions don't usually feature highly in the lives of these women so they were really grateful.

A simple message of love speaks many languages!  Thank you Jersey Company for helping to pamper women in the Congo.

JoinFITE is working!

So far we’ve lent a total of $325 to 13 different female entrepreneurs in 7 different developing countries across the world.  We thought you’d like to know a little bit more about one of these women and how our lending is enabling her to build her business.Meet Elisa, she lives in Ecuador, where the average annual income is  $4,776 (about £2985) and we loaned her $25 to help with her poultry business. She is 50 years old and her husband is a bricklayer and a farmer.   To help Elisa generate finance so she can run the household she works on the farm raising chickens and growing corn, yucca (an edible root), platanos (starchy bananas), and vegetables. They are lucky that a river runs through their farm, which allows them to grow crops all year long.  At harvest time they bring their vegetables and products to the Santa Ana market in their city.

Our loan has been used to buy chickens for Elisa and to make a small chicken coop next to their house in order to raise a greater number of chickens.  Their goals are to continue working and to enjoy good health.

She has already repaid $4.16 and is paying her loan back on time.  Kiva, who are the world’s leading microfinance organisation administer the loans and work with local microfinance organisations in Ecuador.

These are real people with real stories, step by step, with your commitment to purchase JoinFITE products and redeem your JoinFITE codes, together with our commitment to continue giving will make a real difference in the lives of women all across the world.  Together we can take small steps that make a big difference.

Thanks for getting involved!

Just noticed we have $30 paid back into the kiva account – time to do another loan!
