Wondering why our Dermalogica prices have increased? Here's why...

attachment-52cd76bfe4b0704e3fc2fd73

The team here at 'The Jersey Company' have been happily delivering Dermalogica products to a gorgeous group of customers for over 6 years.  Dermalogica's fabulous products combined with our exceptional service, advice and support has grown a group of smiling faces into a huge and rather bubbly gang of Jersey-loving fans. So, you may have noticed in the past few weeks that we've made some changes to our Dermalogica prices.  It kinda sucks doesn’t it? Well, we actually think so too and whilst that might sound odd and you may be well be asking “So why change the prices then?” (We certainly would if we were in your shoes).

Dermalogica have in the last few weeks announced some major price changes to all their suppliers which means that we needed to increase prices with immediate effect. We didn’t know the announcement was coming so we couldn’t let you know in advance (we are kinda great but mind readers we unfortunately are not!)

**So does this mean that Jersey are simply being greedy?** No, in fact quite the opposite. Dermalogica HQ feel we need less support and should pay more to be able to deliver the products to you. So the more we buy, the more we pay... kinda silly hey?

That doesn’t mean we make any extra profits. In fact, we make none at all. We will be delivering the same exceptional levels of service and support that you’re used to, it just means our team may have to forgo the choccie biscuits for a while (yup we love you guys that much).

**So this affects lots of companies?** Yup. You see, Dermalogica’s main aim is to support and develop their network of professional skincare therapists so the hike in prices for larger companies like us means that most internet companies will have to increase their prices considerably.

**What does this mean for Jersey Beauty Company?** Well, this year we want to continue building on the success of last year but we can only do that with your help. We have an incredible community of loyal and engaged customers, exactly  like you who we hope will stick around and continue to enjoy the fun, frolics and exceptional service you’ve come to expect.

We are passionate about our products, our team and you, our spectacularly brilliant customers so we are doing all we can to keep delivering wow and happy in every way we can.

**Not happy with Dermalogica?** We love their products and we’re sure you do too. Still, if you’re not happy with the price changes you can:

1.Contact us with any questions and we’ll help in any way we can. Our phone number is 0845 833 387 or drop an email to support@thejerseycommpany.co.uk

2. Tell Dermalogica how you feel about their new pricing policy. Here’s their phone number 01372 363600 or you can email enquiry@dermalogica.co.uk

3. If you would like to understand what other brands we supply can do to help you with your skin care and look at alternatives then let us know and we’ll recommend some for you.

2012 is drawing to a close and it’s been an award winning year for Jersey Beauty!

attachment-52cd76bee4b0704e3fc2fd6b

There has been a little buzz here at Jersey HQ for the last few days as we have been keeping some rather fab news firmly under our hats! Well, the time has finally come to reveal all and we are super-pleased and oh so excited to tell you that, as from today, we became an official European Winner 2012 in the Shopzilla Circle of Excellence Awards (hurrah for us!).

"The Circle of Excellence recognises those online retailers within the Shopzilla Research network who have demonstrated outstanding performance, as rated by their customers, throughout a one year period. In 2012, over 2,000 online merchants in the UK were considered for an award. Winners consistently obtained feedback from their customers throughout the award year period and received the highest ratings."

 Michelle Anderson, Shopzilla

Earning the award means that Jersey has consistently received significantly higher satisfaction ratings from you, our rather fabulous customers, than the average scores usually seen here in the UK. The scores are calculated from seven key satisaction indicators:

  • Overall satisfaction at the point of sales
  • Product selection
  • Ease of finding what you are looking for
  • Repurchase intent after order receipt
  • Product met expectations after order receipt
  • On-time delivery
  • Customer support

So when we say we deliver happy, we really mean it! But then our job is made pretty easy thanks to you lovely lot so we would like to huge thank you to you all for giving us the thumbs up and helping us achieve such a coveted accolade!

Hello London Fashion Week

The Jersey Company had the amazing privilege to share a big dose of Dermalogica love with the Fashion World this week. Myself (I’m Rach) and my super-duper legend of a team-mate Jan were invited to the Jayne Pierson Screening held at Somerset House, part of London Fashion Week (LFW). Without any hesitation we sent our RSVPs and starting deliberating about dresses and handbags.

The day was soon upon us (and our new handbags longing for an outing). We’d sent our Jersey Beauty Company gifts on ahead of us (our handbags weren’t Mary Poppins style!) The silver envelopes contained Deluxe Dermalogica Samples of Special Cleansing Gel, Multivitamin Power Firm, Daily Microfoliant and Skin Smoothing Cream - guaranteed to bring a smile. Our day was full to the brim of fun; we sat back and watched a fantastic show, saw some outrageous outfits, chatted away about our love affair with Dermalogica (and picked up a gorgeous goodie bag).

Want to get your hands on your own LFW Goodie bag? Just comment on our Facebook page to tell us what’s included in our Age Smart Gift Pack and we’ll draw a random winner and send them all these goodies:

Winning Dermalogica skincare products to get ahead of the game.....

attachment-52cd76bde4b0704e3fc2fd5f

Whether you love it, loathe it or sit on the fence none of us can deny that 2012 is turning out be a summer of sport and although our chances of winning Euro 2012 were scuppered at penalties, our attention has been given a timely diversion thanks to a little on-court action at Wimbledon this last week and of course, should ball games not be your thing, the Olympics are quickly appearing into view delivering a veritable medley of sporty eye fodder this year! Sport is by its nature is competitive and whilst Team JBC are not pundits of the pitch, we know a thing a two about beating those irritating skin conditions which so often threaten to frustrate and irritate us into submission. Much like any other, getting ahead in the good skin game requires patience, timing, consistency and technique. If you feel like you are on a losing streak, here is our pick of the bunch when it comes to high achievers, bit hitters and winning combos.

Sensitive sorts

Simplicity is key when it comes to taking care of ultra sensitive skin so stick to a simple 3 step cleanse, hydrate and nourish with products that actively calm and soothe sensitive skin whilst taming tell-tale redness. Try Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser, UltraCalming Mist, UltraCalming Serum Concentrate then finish up with Dermalogica Barrier Repair for skin thanks sighs ahhh daily.

Spot on

Adult acne is frustratingly difficult to manage at time but with a little perseverance and consistency you can win the battle. Cleanse, tone and moisturise is absolutely key, do it well and do it twice daily to keep skin squeaky clean. Gentle exfoliation weekly will help remove a build-up of debris through the overproduction of oil. Try Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermofoliant for super effective skin polishing and refining. When spots break out, pick up treatment specific products such as Dermalogica Medibac Overnight Clearing Gel or Medibac Clearing Mattifier.

Desperately dry

Dry skin may well be dehydrated or simply lacking in adequate lipid protection or function so the key is taking care not use products that remove natural moisture or excessive amounts of sebum, or which damage the skins’ ability to regulate moisture by stripping away its natural protection. Where skin needs extra support try Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster,Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance or Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Concentrate.

Eyes Down

Squinting, rubbing, and lacking of sleep, our poor old eyes tell the whole story with bags, lines and dark circles a plenty. Beat the bags, draw the line and kick creases the kerb with superstar products such as Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex,Dermalogica Intensive Eye Repair or Dermalogica Total Eye Care to get eyes brighter and lighter in no time.

Whatever shape our national and international sporting endeavours take this year, keep you skin in winning condition with the right products for the job.

Quick pick-me-ups for tired skin

A long weekend should in theory have us all feeling recharged and ready for anything this morning but in reality, very few of us take time out to indulge in the copious amounts of rest and relaxation many of us want or need. Instead, we find ourselves in mini holiday mode, eating more, doing more and generally ignoring our need to take time out in favour of far more interesting and exciting goings on. Hurrah to that we say but if you are now left feeling  like you need an actual holiday, here are some quickie tips to have you pepped up and feeling refreshed:Sleep, snooze and catnap thoroughly

It is impossible to catch up on those missed zzzz’s but getting enough sleep regularly will keep your body’s repair mechanisms working well and your skin looking and feeling better. Aim to get to bed half an hour earlier during the next couple of weeks or take a mini nap for twenty minutes during the day. If you are snoozing in the day, set an alarm to avoid slipping into deep sleep and waking up feeling heavy headed.

Get serious with your skincare

If only we could press the reset button and wake looking fresh as a daisy after a long and eventful weekend. No matter how meticulously we clean and nourish our skin sometimes we need that little extra helping hand to get things back on track. Try a high impact facial such as Guinot Hydradermie with its deeply cleansing, oxygenating and plumping effects or go the whole hog with the Guinot Beaute Neuve Peel which exfoliates, nourishes and hydrates skin back into a happy healthy state.  Both are available at the Jersey Treatment Rooms in Liverpool or talk to your local professional salon for treatments and advice.

Exfoliate then exfoliate some more

Regular exfoliation at home is key to keeping cellular activity in good working order but too much or too little can be damaging or ineffective. Using a combination of products and techniques will produce great results without the irritation. Body brushing is the perfect daily workout for all over super smoothie skin whilst Dermaogicas Daily Microfoliant is, as the name suggests, gentle enough to use daily with great results.  For an extra facial boost try Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant once a week for skin that is ultra clean and bright.

Add a touch of sunshine

If you feel your skin needs a little shot of colour to even out tone and brighten the complexion, try Dermalogica Sheer Tint Moisture SPF15 in light, medium or dark which hydrates, protects and adds a hint of colour to skin. If you prefer the ‘I just got back from a week in warmer climates’ kind of look, opt instead for a bronzer, instant or gradual tanner such as those from the He-Shi range to provide a deeper more bronzed tone.

The inside scoop on Jersey Treatment Rooms

Have a look into what really goes on at one of newest Jersey Treatment Rooms in Liverpool with this blogpost by Philippa, one our recent customers who posted this on her blog:

Sometimes a little gesture by another person can make your day and today Lisa from The Jersey Treatment Rooms on Allerton Road in Liverpool did just that when she let me have the Gel OPI nails for my manicure for only £5 more instead of £25.

I regularly use the Jersey Treatment Rooms (formally Origin Rejuvenation Clinic) for beauty and holistic treatments but today I really felt that the service I received went above and beyond. From the complimentary mint tea served in silky tea bags to the free Dermalogica and Guinot samples I walked away with, the customer service was A+.

Having spent the last 4 days on a School trip to France with 44 12 and 13 year olds, suffering two 16 hour plus coach journeys and a major lack of sleep, my body was in desperate need of some TLC. I called up at 10am and an hour and a half later I was laid out on the massage bed receiving a full body hot stones massage and a 30 minute express facial.

I have been a fan of hot stones massages ever since I had my first experience of one at the Gary Player Spa in Sun City in 2008. If, like me, you carry all your stress and tension in your shoulders and exercise a lot, I feel that the hot stones massage is the best therapy to work deep into the muscles, relieving tension and melting away knots. The therapy works by rubbing the hot stones over the muscles and the heat ensures that the massage works deep into the muscles, relaxing and rejuvenating. An added enjoyment today came in the form of some mixed Decleor massage oils, heated up, meaning that even as Lisa was massaging the oils into my skin, the heat was working at helping my tired and aching muscles.

For my facial, Lisa also used Decleor products and, having never come across this product before, I must say I was very impressed. I have very sensitive skin and often avoid facials due to bad experiences in numerous salons where my skin has felt like it was burning as soon as the products are applied. Today, however, I left the salon feeling like my face had been completely refreshed and rejuvenated and I could not stop touching my silky, smooth skin as I walked home (not the right thing to do after a facial I know!)

Finally the manicure was desperately needed as my cuticles were not in a good way and the skin had started to split around the edge of my nails which is neither a good look or particularly pleasant. I was so pleased to be given the OPI gel nail option as it is the only manicure that lasts well for me, no matter how good the manicurist, I always chip my nails within 24 hours). The OPI gel is very similar to Shellac and lasts for 2 weeks (and it actually does, I must be the most heavy handed person in the world and it doesn’t chip on me). I wanted to opt for a slightly different colour today and so on the recommendation of the salon manager I decided on 'Cajun Shrimp'

So all in all today has been a thoroughly enjoyable day, just what I needed to wind down after the stress and endurance suffered taking away 44 teenagers! I am now revitalised and ready to head to Paris tomorrow with relaxed muscles, glowing skin and nails suitably apt for my Saturday afternoon aperitif in the Ritz.

Merci beaucoup Jersey Treatment Rooms!

Teaching pamper skills to women in the Congo!

We recently gave dermalogica samples to a team of people from a local church, who were visiting Butembo, in the North East of the Democratic Republic of Congo.  As the Jersey Company we wholeheartedly support JoinFITE, established by Dermalogica, who help women entrepreneurs all around the world fund microloans to start or develop their business.  We saw this as a great opportunity to give something (however small) to women find themselves in challenging situations everyday, just like the women who apply to JoinFITE.Here's their story:

We travelled to DR Congo with the aim of establishing links within the city to partner with schools, hospitals and NGOs. One of the groups we'd previously worked with support ex-child soldiers and victims of rape. We spent time with them, listening to their stories and gave them gifts, including some of the dermalogica samples given to us by The Jersey Company.

The DR Congo has struggled to recover from war for the past 10 years and this area has very little input from aid groups as it still has a lot of rebel activity.

Lydia, one of the team members said: "It's hard to put into words some of the things that these people have already been through in the early stages of their lives. We wanted to bring a simple message of love."

Whilst we were there we also spent an afternoon with many of the women from one of the local churches. As communication was difficult due to the language barriers we decided the best way to communicate was demonstrating how to use the dermalogica product samples and then we let the women practice on each other. They had huge amounts of fun applying face masks, moisturisers and massaging each other's hands as well as a bit of nail painting. As you can see from the pictures they thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Pamper sessions don't usually feature highly in the lives of these women so they were really grateful.

A simple message of love speaks many languages!  Thank you Jersey Company for helping to pamper women in the Congo.

Bronzed Goddess - guest post by Hannah

Wife, Mother, Hairdresser, Nail Technician, Entertainer to our 15 month old, and soon to be ‘Bronzed Goddess’...My husband is Mediterranean with lovely olive skin, which means he can tan by candle light. Our daughter was fortunate enough to have inherited his skin tone. I on the other hand (like many of us) have to work at looking golden brown….Over the years I've tried all sorts of self-tanning products, from salon treatments to ‘at home’ kits.  My latest discovery is "He Shi", and I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of my parcel from The Jersey Beauty Company.

I bought the “He Shi kit” which contains an Exfoliating Bodywash, Express Liquid Tan, and Day to Day Gradual Tan (all 50ml bottles). The kit also contains a Miniature tanning Mitt.

This is how I got on:

Day 1 – Now the fun begins..... According to the packaging I should use the Exfoliating Bodywash 24 hours prior to applying the tanning liquid. The exfoliator smells divine; it has a yummy scent of strawberries that stays on your skin after showering. It contains Micro-dermabrasion crystals that gently remove dead skin cells. I found after using this I didn’t even need to moisturise, my skin was left very soft to touch and smooth.

Day 2 – Right I’ve waited 24 hours and I’m very excited to get on with tanning. Opening the Express Liquid Tan bottle I discover it actually *is* a ‘liquid’ and not a cream, so it’s extremely runny. I’ve put on plastic gloves to prevent tanned palms and am ready to go! Using the Tanning Mitt makes it very easy to apply evenly, and the liquid is brown so you can see exactly where you’ve been. After a couple of minutes the liquid has soaked in and I’m completely “dry”….so far I’m pleased with the result.....now off to bed.

Day 3 – This morning I was slightly worried what I was going to discover (after trying out a new tanning lotion then going to bed). I had visions of waking up a streaky, patchy orange mess but I’m pleasantly surprised at how good it looks. The tan is darker than I expected, but I need to shower so I can wash off any residue……ok shower done, and I must say my tan looks fabulous and even (no streaks, no dark patches, and no orange skin). It actually looks natural, unlike many products I tried in the past.

Personally I found ‘He Shi’ produces perfect results quickly and easily, and I love how the tanning liquid doesn’t smell (at all). I’ve since used the Day to Day Lotion and that has a very slight scent, but nothing offensive or fake tan-y. The Express Liquid Tan has given me a lovely naturally bronzed look. There is only one thing I would change…the size of the Tanning Mitt contained in the kit. I just feel it’s a bit too small, but hey you can’t please everyone :-)

You can buy ‘He Shi’ direct from The Jersey Company for £16.12 (free P+P in the UK and £3.50 P+P to Zurich).

Happy Tanning!

Hannah

A little liquid sunshine to ease away the rainy days of spring....

Spring showers may be dampening spirits and have us all still stuck in winter woolies but with the promise of sunshine just around the corner it’s time to be thinking about giving skin some summer-ready colour.Warmer weather inevitably means lighter clothes and exposure of parts previously hidden under layers of clothing and whilst some of us look fabulously pale and interesting, others like a hint of summer glow to look and feel less winter worn.

As you know, JBC are no advocates of tanning beds or excessive sun exposure so our choice for achieving that warmer golden tone is always to head for the bottle and grab a little liquid sunshine. Last year our top tanner was market leader St Tropez which we love and adore so you’ll be pleased to hear that this year it has been joined by another award winning super tanner He-Shi to give you double doses of great tanning products.

He-Shi offers a simple three-step process which is super easy, super quick and, dare we say it, pretty much foolproof for even the most rushed and impatient amongst us! The range includes gradual self tanners, long lasting mouse and liquid tans plus gorgeous bronzing products to highlight and accentuate face and décolletage. Their patented express liquid tan delivers an instant shot of colour helping prevent streaks and boosting complexions in the process.

Still not sure? Here’s why we like He-Shi so much.....

  • The products are kind to skin thanks to a special paraben free and alcohol free formulation. The active tanning ingredient comes from naturally derived carbohydrates which penetrate only skin deep. The He-Shi range is also packed with glycerine to help keep skin soft, supple and well moisturised.
  • You will never wake up smelling of stale biscuits or those other odd odours usually associated with some self tanning products. He-Shi worked hard to create a product which is almost odourless on contact and during the development stage.
  • Rather as the name suggests, He-Shi is suitable for application by men and women thanks to specially formulated products which offer super smooth application without clinging to hair follicles.
  • The formula delivers instant colour so you can see exactly where it’s going so theres no chance of patchiness, white bits or streaks.  The tanning mitt smooths the product cleanly all over for an even finish whilst helping prevent the dreaded staining of palms.
  • He-Shi is quick drying and offers an instant hint of colour which develops gradually within 8-10 hours, meaning you can get dressed within 5 minutes and be glowing come morning.

If you are looking for some further hints and tips on tanning well, product types and skin preparation read our post on why sunless tanning needn’t be a headache. If you want to know more about He-Shi their YouTube Channel is packed full of helpful hints to help you achieve the perfect summer glow.

Skin loving essentials to supercharge mind and body.....

If you have looked at your skincare product ingredients listings of late you may have noticed that Essential Oils (or some of their constituents such as linalool or geraniol) are present in many of the products we love and use but if you think that it’s just their uplifting aromas which are beneficial, it’s definitely time to take a closer look. Essentials Oils not only smell divine, they happen to have some pretty potent benefits for our skin and their inclusion in many products not only deliver a whole host of great benefits in their own right but also help to support and enhance the effects of other ingredients. So what to look out for? Here’s our top five.....Top of the list is Rose (most commonly used is Rosa damascena) which delivers an intoxicating yet comforting fragrance, supports and enhances the skins natural repairing abilities, soothes and comforts sensitive skin and is particularly useful for mature skin in need of a little extra care.

Another big hitter in the skincare stakes is Chamomile (Roman and German, commonly listed as Anthemis nobilis and  Matricaria chamomilla respectively). Roman Chamomile is the most used thanks to it’s potent skin soothing, calming and healing abilities. Especially good for sensitive, combination and mature skin types thanks to it’s healing and calming properties.

Next up is Geranium (commonly listed as Pelargonium graveolens) which is another floral aroma and is renowned for it’s ability to help balance and stabilise oily or combination skin whilst calming irritation. Geranium is a particularly good mood enhancer too and is known to be be particularly useful in balancing skin affected by hormonal fluctuations.

A must have for mature or damaged skin is Frankincense (usually listed as Boswellia carterii) with it’s familiar woody yet antiseptic undertone, Frankincense helps promote skin healing, tackles fine lines and wrinkles whilst strengthening the skins own ability to remain plumped and toned for longer.

Last but by no means least is Neroli (listed as Citrus aurantium v. amara) which is a deeply woody aroma with citrus (orange) tones. Neroli is the protector of skin helping fight the signs of ageing, promotes healthy cellular growth and, like Frankincense, tackles those fine lines and wrinkles. This essential oil is a personal favourite and bathroom cabinet essential in it’s own right thanks to it’s enticing fragrance (I use year round for special occasions, dabbing a drop on wrists and behind the ear in place of my usual perfume).

So where do you find these little beauties? Many of the products on JB and JBC have essential oils hiding out in the ingredients list (too numerous to mention here!) and work in synergy with a whole host of other lovely ingredients but if you are looking to give skin a super drenching in essential oils why not try Decleor Aromessence Oils. These specially blended face and body oils, come elixirs, deliver highly concentrated benefits exactly where and when you need them. They can be used alone but are especially useful at supercharging the recommended Decleor moisturiser (a process Decleor call the Aroma Duo Concept and which promises to boost the effects of each individual product dramatically). Take a look at each individual oil for recommended complementary products.

Feeling under the weather? Here's some top tips for tackling springtime colds.....

Having managed to smugly avoid a whole grisly array of bugs and virus’s last winter I find myself surprisingly struck down this week with one of those ‘head for the couch and don’t move until Summer’ kind of colds. You know the sort where your throat feels like a tiny man with a chainsaw has been working the nightshift, your nose is streaming far quicker than your super-fast broadband ever does and your head feels like a feather stuffed pillow? That’s me. So, should you find yourself (or a loved one) in the same predicament, here’s some top tips on taking care of yourself and getting back to your old self sooner rather than later.

  • It sounds pretty obvious but rest, sleep and relax as much as you can. If you feel well enough or simply have to be in the office, try to work a shorter day or grab a sneaky snooze during the lunch break to recharge weary bodies.
  • If you are couch or bed-bound, try and grab a quick 10 minutes outside everyday to boost mood and clear the head.
  • Stock up on foods which are easily digestible, quick, tasty and have a high water content to help avoid dehydration. Try vitamin and water rich fruits such as grapes, oranges, strawberries and mango plus nourishing foods such as miso or chicken noodle soup.
  • Sip tepid water little and often. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime plus some honey to help soothe a sore throat.
  • If you are partial to a hot toddy before bed, add 4-6 cloves, a piece of cinnamon and 4-5 bashed peppercorns to tackle a sore throat and chesty cough.
  • If you are taking cold and flu remedies you may find that it’s not only your cold that dries up. The active ingredients may also leave your eyes feeling dry too so bathe them nightly in boiled and cooled water before bed and apply a hydrating gel to the exterior. Try Decleor Harmonie Calm Milky Gel Cream For Eyes or Dermalogica Intensive Eye Repair to help rehydrate and soothe the delicate eye area.
  • If you find that your hands are dryer than usual due to the extra washing or cleansing apply a super rich moisturisr or pick up some almond oil and apply as needed.
  • A hot bath is usually the first place to head when limbs are aching but hot is not always wise. Run the water warm instead of hot to avoid drying skin further and to avoid feeling lightheaded. Pour in some mineral salts and essential oils to help ease the aches and clear the head. Try Epsom Salts combined with 2-3 drops of Eucalyptus and Lavender Essential Oils or alternatively, Dermalogica Hydro Active Mineral Salts with a little Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil to soothe those sore spots back to some sense of normality.
  • If you nose is too stuffy to sleep, use a burner to infuse Essential Oils such as Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Lemon and Lavender. An electric version can be safely left on overnight if needed but all should be on around 30 minutes before bed to allow the essential oils to fully fill the room.

If you have any handy hints and tips for helping us all feel better that little bit quicker, let us have them!

Brush the day away to reveal peachy soft skin.....

When taking care of our skin, most of us have a tendency to separate our bits into problem parts and whilst there are those areas that could always do with a little extra TLC, there is one thing that we can do everyday to help keep skin happy and healthy all over. Say hello to body brushing.Body brushing is not a new idea but it is one that passes under the radar for most of us - perhaps due to those scratchy looking bristles or maybe because the idea of standing naked in the bathroom on a cold and wet morning doesn’t quite have the ‘pamper me all over’ feel, but (and this is mighty big but) body brushing works wonders. Skin is lightly exfoliated and circulation stimulated to encourage improved tone and texture quicker than you can say here comes summer.

The key is choosing the right brush, using the right techniques and doing it daily - yes even on those cold winter mornings. It is not a quick fix but within a week or so you will start to see a big improvement and by summer, skin will be peachy soft and glowing with health.

The right brush for the job

Body brushes come in all shapes and sizes and with promises of all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff. Ignore the hype and keep it simple, it is after all essentially just a brush - it’s what you do with it that counts.

Go for a natural bristle brush with a long wooden handle to get to all those hard to reach places. Bristles should be just firm enough to bend easily when pressed but soft enough not to feel uncomfortably scratchy on your sensitive areas. Try a gentle stoke or two on the inside wrist to test for comfort. Once you get used to body brushing, a small circular natural bristle brush with a strap is a good addition to help you get stuck into thighs and elbows more briskly.

Caring for your brush

Brushes need very little care: store in dryish place (the bathroom is fine as long as it doesn’t double as a daily steam room) and rinse throughly twice a month, allowing to air dry fully before using again.

Technique is key

Body brushing should be done with a dry clean brush, ideally prior to bathing either in the morning or evening and directly onto clean dry skin.

  • Start at the feet and use long circular upward strokes, working up the body towards the heart.
  • Movements should be brisk and continuous, moving from the feet up and around the front and rear of the lower leg, paying attention to the front of the knee then up and over the thighs.
  • Begin to use smaller circular movements to massage and brush the rear of the thigh and over the bottom.
  • Sweep up and around the tummy area using lighter strokes to minimise discomfort, moving up to the chest area using the same lighter strokes.
  • Using a firmer touch again, sweep up the back of the arms from the fingertips to the shoulder in round upward movements. Repeat inside the arm with lighter pressure.
  • Finish up with the aid of the longer handle to brush the back from bottom to neck.
  • Skin will look red in places and should feel pleasantly tingly and alive.

Follow-up care for fabulous skin

To avoid feeling sore and risking dehydrated skin, ensure your shower is warm rather than hot (if you are feeling very brave, alternating warm and cold for a few minutes will give an extra boost to circulation).

To enhance and support the effects of regular brushing, use an invigorating but gentle body wash such as Dermalogica Conditioning Body Wash with circulation boosting essential oils of Rosemary and Lemon. Follow-up with gentle but effective mosituriser such as Dermalogica Body Hydrating Cream applied to damp skin to lock in hydration.

Alternatively, try Decleor Aromessence Slim Effect Draining Contour Serum daily or as a twice weekly treat to feed, nourish and improve skin tone using a special blend of essential oils to specifically target those lumps and bumps.

If extra help is needed to tame unruly bottoms and thighs, lovingly slather in Decleor Baume Slim Effect Draining Massage Balm with essential oils of grapefruit, lemongrass and rosemary essential oils to naturally improve tone and texture.

Skin health doesn’t have to be complicated which is why body brushing scores highly with us here at JBC... and besides, what could be easier than 5 little minutes every day!

Don’t know where to begin with teenage skincare? Say hello to Clean Start.....

Reaching the often long awaited and much anticipated teenage years brings that inevitable mix of excitement and angst, freedom and responsibility, accompanied more often than not by skin which seems to completely morph out of control to deliver regular sigh (or run for the hills and hide) inducing breakouts.Getting skin under control can seem like a never ending cycle of product testing and experimentation only to find that what worked last week is now causing irritation, soreness or worsening breakouts. The problem is often due to overuse or misuse of what are pretty potent and astringent products aimed at reducing excess oil production to limit spot and bacteria formation but in doing so, skin is unable to balance itself more naturally. That’s where Clean Start is that little bit different.

The Dermalogica ethos of promoting skin health over beauty was the starting point when developing the Clean Start range. Dermalogica founder Jane Wurwand went straight to source, talked to teenagers directly and found out what really happens to their skin, what they found frustrating and talked about how to tackle skin issues more effectively. The Clean Start range was co-developed in collaboration with future users who had a hand in everything from what the products should offer, how they were packaged and how they were branded. Simple, easy to use packaging with products that keep skin clean and healthy is what Clean Start is about.

Clean Start lays in place the early and all important foundations for maintaining healthy skin throughout adulthood, using ingredients which are gentle enough to be used regularly but which punch well above their weight to deliver real and lasting results. This, all thanks to a simple three stage system; Stage 1 thoroughly cleanses without irritation, Stage 2 offers treatments to target those problem areas and Stage 3 moisturises, soothes and protects. Managing and maintaining skin health and balance is the key - support healthy skin function and the rest kind of takes care of itself.

Dermalogica expertise has helped shape Clean Start into a no-fuss product range which simplifies the daily cleansing routine to deliver an easy solution to managing unruly skin and whilst a good starting point for teenage needs, with those roots fixed firmly in Dermalogica soil it also means that stubborn adult acne may just have found its nemesis.

Have you tried Clean Start yet? Let us know what you think.

An age old problem.....

If you didn’t catch the JBC interview with Dr John Briffa posted here last week it’s definitely worth a watch particularly since it raised some interesting points on achieving healthier, happier skin through small but meaningful changes to the diet. We were happy to hear that putting good stuff into our body supports and improves the efficacy of the good stuff we put onto our skin. The interview also took a surprising direction in broaching the prickly question of how to deal with the regular and often uncomfortable symptoms associated with the hormonal riots occurring during the premenstrual phase of the monthly cycle.

Symptoms, as many of us know range from the barely there to the boundary pushing extreme, a day or two of general discomfort for some and weeks of abject misery for others. PMS is such a common occurrence that women don’t talk about it all that much, it’s kind of a given that most of us experience it at some time and with varying degrees of discomfort so it makes for refreshing listening to hear a couple of guys talking about it in the context of diet and health.

The thing that might strike a particular chord with any of us experiencing PM related symptoms was the mention of a little known or rarely mentioned herbal remedy Agnus Castus which Dr Briffa claimed to be the single most effective thing in helping alleviate some of the associated discomfort. He pointed out that most women have never heard of the herb let alone tried it out but, as you would expect, his claims are not unfounded and can be backed up by persuasive evidence from a number of trials including this one published in the BMJ way back in 2001.

It was a robust randomised, double blind, placebo controlled trial assessing the experience of 178 women via self monitoring procedures and clinical assessment scoring and which produced positive results for the 170 women finally evaluated.  The trial officially concluded “Dry extract of agnus castus fruit is an effective and well tolerated treatment for the relief of symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome.”

So there you have it, a simple and easily accessible herbal remedy which is rarely recommended, never discussed and yet has few reported side effects and demonstrable positive results!

If you haven’t yet watched the interview in full, it’s definitely worth grabbing a cuppa and settling down to watch it when you have time.  If you only have 10 minutes, the section on food and ‘beauty’ offer quick and easy hints on keeping skin in great condition.

As always, if you have any personal hints and tips on achieving and maintaining healthy skin we want to hear about them and if you have tried agnus castus or are a current devotee, tell us about your own experiences so we can spread the word on what works (or not!).

Spring clean your routine and pep up tired eyes.....

It’s official, my hunker down for winter habits have caught up me; too many late nights, long hours squinting in front of the laptop, the ‘a little too often and less than thorough' cleansing topped off with regular drenchings of too much caffeine equals eyes that look as tired as they feel! The lighter brighter days of spring are glaringly unforgiving, highlighting every hint of puffiness, creasing and darkening but with a little care attention, we can regain that bright eyed, wide awake feeling in time for summer.

Eat Well

Spring makes it far easier to cram in a greater quantity and variety of fruit and vegetables so take advantage of the natural shifts and plan to include those packed with skin friendly Vitamins A and C. Snack on seeds and nuts to get a daily dose of the all important Vitamin E. Excessive alcohol intake damages the skins ability to repair as well as causing dehydration so, as with all great pleasures in life, enjoy everything in moderation.

Sleep Well

8 hours a night is a good general target for most of us but it’s getting sleep at the right time and achieving a good quality of sleep which is actually more beneficial.  The old adage of ‘an hour before midnight is worth two after’ may not be strictly true but there is is some scientific basis to such granny wisdom. Sleep at the right time allows the body to repair and regenerate unhindered which also means kicking the midnight snacks, late night coffee of extra glass of wine after dinner! Aim for four earlier than usual nights out of seven to see an improvement in sleep deprived eyes.

Water well

Dehydration is a major cause of fine lines, creases and dark circles and whilst most of us get enough fluids naturally from our diet, our skin care products are not always delivering that much needed dose of hydration. Overuse or incorrect application of cleansing products can also have a detrimental impact, leading to tightness and irritation, in turn creating that itch scratch cycle that can damage delicate eye tissue.  So, the shift from spring into summer is the perfect time to take a closer look at your eye products to see what’s working and what needs attention.  Here are our top product picks for perkier eyes this year:

Dermalogica Pre-cleanse - apply a little Pre-Cleanse to a tepid damp cloth and apply gently to remove eye make-up prior to cleansing.

Dermalogica Soothing Eye make-up remover - an oil free and alcohol free formula to help gently but effectively remove all traces of your eye make-up. Silk Amino Acids help strengthen and condition lashes whilst you cleanse.

Decleor Aroma Cleanse Eye Make-Up Remover Gel All Mascaras - super gentle gel formula which shifts even waterproof mascara without irritating the eyes or surrounding tissues.  Suitable for contact lens wearers too.

Decleor Hydra Floral Anti Pollution Moisturising Gel-Cream For Eyes - super light, ultra hydrating formulation which smoothes, soothes and reduces dark circles, puffiness and fine lines. Pollution fighting botanicals make it the perfect morning antidote.

Dermalogica Total Eye Care - super nourishing treatment which repairs and protects the delicate eye are. Packed with ingredients proven to reduce fine lines, puffiness and dark circles whilst improving texture and tone. Added SPF15 guards against further UV damage.

Crystal Clear Eye Pen - the unique formula of specially specially developed active ingredients coupled with the massage action of the pen will create an instant lifting and tightening effect making it perfect for a quick boost, as well as delivering the all important longer lasting effects.

What are your top tips, tricks and hints for keeping eyes looking bright and breezy this spring?

Mothers day gifts for those in need of pampering ....

As Mothers Day approaches our heads have been filled with lots of lovely ideas for spoiling and indulging our own mums and this year, with a surprising number of friends and relatives having recently joined the sleepless night brigade, we thought it would be really rather nice to offer some ideas on spoiling mums of all ages and stages.Mothers day hints and tips are usually focussed solely on buying or doing for those mums belonging to us or coming as part of the marriage package but we all have those lovely friends, sisters or partners/wives who have become first time mums or are new mums again and who we might just want to treat on mothers day too so here’s our quickie picks of our perfect mothers day gifts for mums, mother-in-laws, or those newly appointed mums in need of some pampering:

Top of our list this year is the InStyle Best Beauty Buys award winner Decleor Aromessence Neroli Oil which has just been voted best facial oil for 2012. Facial oils are one of those products that we read about often yet rarely buy for ourselves (which is exactly why it makes a fabulous mothers day treat). Decleor have created a product which drenches the skin without feeling too oily, packing a punch of hydration and a fragrance to die for! Nourishing, skin-friendly and suitable for mums of all ages, this little bottle of tricks offers an instant pick-me-up for tired looking skin with long term soothing and hydrating benefits. Follow up with Decleor Aromessence Neroli Essential Night Balm for baby soft skin in the morning!

We all know and love that ‘just from the hairdressers’ feeling but the hormonal changes of pregnancy or the menopause can often leave hair feeling dry, flyaway and sometimes completely unmanageable! If booking a session at the salon for styling is a bit too risky, New mums and old mums alike will appreciate a full hour of Head, Neck and Shoulder Massage to relax bodies and boost the strength and vitality of the hair. Sneak a massage gift voucher into a Moroccan Oil Travel Treatment Kit for the perfect mothers day pampering treat (Jersey Beauty March Madness means you can save 20% off Moroccan Oil products just by liking us here!)

If your mum is more in need of a full a full body massage, pummel and preen but isn’t a spa weekend kind of bod, why not book her in to your local salon or day spa for an afternoon of treats and pampering. Arrange transport there and home again to avoid undoing an afternoons relaxation to heavy traffic then have some prosecco chilled and waiting for her return so you can both settle in for an evening of girly conversation. If you happen to live up here in the North, the Jersey Treatment Rooms in Allerton are offering some lovely treats for mums (and you) in the run up to Mothers Day.

For those busier than busy mums why not mix and match travel sized products with other quick-fix essentials that can happily reside in the handbag, baby-bag or desk drawer for handy use as the need arises?  Our personal essentials bag would contain nail file for those dreaded snags, travel toothbrush and toothpaste, sticking plasters, Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution, Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist, Dermalogica Environmental Control Deodorant, Dermalogica The Sponge Cloth and Dermalogica Solar Defense Wipes SPF15 (which pretty much covers those quick-fix on the run kind of needs!)

Finally, if you are unsure what to buy for the sensitive skinned or the very particular, the stay at home mum or the daily adventurer JBC gift vouchers may be the answer (and whilst pretty understated they are the perfect present for the undecided!)

Switching allegiance to Total Eye Care

Having reached the grand age of 29 years and 10 months, I decided it was probably time to look at using a new eye cream. I’ve used Dermalogica’s Intensive Eye Repair for several years  and have always been extremely happy with it, but I got thinking “Is this still the right one for me?”As normal I placed our order with ‘The Jersey Beauty Company’  to coincide with  my next trip back to the UK. It had been a while since my last order, and I noticed I could also order some samples of my choice (possibly didn’t notice this before due to ‘baby-brain’).

One of the samples I chose was Dermalogica’s Total Eye Care. What lead me to this initially was the illuminating tint and non chemical sun block. Dermalogica says this is “an advanced alpha-hydroxy eye treatment cream which helps protect and repair the delicate eye area while reducing the appearance of dark circles and lines.”

As a busy working mum I typically end up having early mornings and late nights most days. I still want to look and feel my best, and I know the eye area is important to how youthful we feel.

I’ve been using my sample now for the past 2 weeks (it really has lasted well).  You only need a very small amount and it leaves the skin around my eyes feeling silky smooth. I also no longer need to use my under-eye concealer,  as this eye cream has a tint and highlighter in it.  Result?...quick and easy all in one eye care which, given how long it can last, actually works out to be good value too.

Thanks  for reading! Hannah

Skin nourishing products for wedding day planning.....
